Mercedes Benz S-Class Cabriolet Overview
Mercedes, in the last couple of years, has got every possible form of the iconic S-Class to India. It started with the S500 and then we got the S-Guard, the Maybach and the S-Coupe. The latest to enter the Indian sovereign land is the Mercedes S-Cabriolet – a drop top beauty based on the two-door S-Coupe. The top of the line S will set you back by at least a couple of crore rupees. But if you are one of those who can afford to spend as much, the S-Cabriolet will offer a proposition akin to the Rolls Royce Dawn or the Bentley GTC for much less.
Exterior and Interior
The S-Cabriolet is the flagship convertible from the Mercedes stable. It is large and stately but sporty at the same time. The S-Class headlamps flank the black diamond grille with a thick horizontal slat – a trademark for performance Mercedes cars. The creases and cuts on the bumper along with the three piece mesh-grille on the air dam makes it look its part as a sportscar.
The interior is luxurious. Upholstered in fine leather and dressed in the regal whites, the cabin of the S-Cabriolet is a place to be. The front seat tumbles down to give access to the rear seats that are good for your kids or if you are the playboy kind, for your playmates. Creature comforts are abundant. A multiple zone climate control, electrically adjustable seats as well as headrests and an electrically operated soft top that fold or unfolds in 20 seconds are a few to mention. The instrument console is a TFT screen and the COMAND gets another TFT display that can be controlled through the new touchpad.
Engine and Transmission
There is the Mercedes 4.7-litre twin turbo petrol V8 engine to power the luxury yacht. With 449bhp of power and 700Nm of torque available, the S500 Cabriolet is no slouch. The power is sent to the right set of wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission to take the car upwards of 200kmph quite comfortably.
Conclusion
The Mercedes S500 Cabriolet does not really have a direct competitor. While the package it offers is similar to the Rolls Royce Dawn or the Bentley Continental GTC, the price tag will be much lower. And for the price it is expected to command, you can also have the Maserati Gran Cabrio or the Jaguar F-type R convertible.
