Chevrolet Volt Preview:
The Chevrolet Volt is the new generation electric car from General Motors with futuristic technology for long range drivability. It features twin motors for propelling the car, and the electric charge is supplied by a lithium-ion battery pack and a 1.4-litre petrol engine generator. The charging of the battery can be done through a household socket of 240 volts. Once the battery is plugged in, the customer can control the switch on and switch off through a smart phone app or web link, thus adding to the convenience of the user. The battery pack consists of a 16 kWh lithium-ion battery weighing around 200 kg.
The petrol engine is placed under the hood and drive is given to the front wheels through twin motor mounted under the hood. The first motor supplies power for slow speed conditions, and as the power requirement rises, the second motor starts supplying additional power for getting higher speed and torques.
The interior fit and finish, and the comfort of the occupants are enhanced with fine quality of upholstery for the seats, air conditioning and music system. The instrument cluster displays the speed, battery charge level, and fuel level with the maximum range that can be expected with the charge and fuel availability.
The suspension system with McPherson struts, and the lightweight alloy wheels with low friction tires and stability control features add to the comfort and convenience of the occupants during long drives. A feather touch on the acceleration pedal can result in the quick development of power through the electric motor. The speed can increase from 0 to 100 kmph in 9 seconds and a top speed of 120 kmph can be achieved in favourable conditions.
The Chevrolet Volt is already available in the USA and the model to be launched in India is expected to have same specifications with slight changes suiting Indian driving conditions.
Expected Engine and Transmission:
The Chevrolet Volt specifications feature two electric motors and a petrol engine with 1.4 litre capacity. The maximum power and torque outputs are 149 PS at 4800 rpm and 272 Nm, respectively. The petrol engine does not have the drive to wheels, like a conventional vehicle. Instead, when the acceleration is increased beyond 80 kmph, the engine starts working and supplies power to the motor for high-speed driving. The transmission system features two-ratio planetary gears transmitting drive to the front wheels.
Expected Mileage:
In standard conditions of driving, with an electric charge from the battery, the charge can last up to 80 km in one complete charging. As the petrol engine generator starts giving charge to the motor, the mileage can range up to 550 km with one full tank of fuel of 35 litre. The Chevrolet Volt mileage can vary slightly depending on the driving mode and source of electric charge.
Expected Price:
The Chevrolet Volt price in India is expected to be range at Rs. 34 Lakh (Ex-Showroom, New Delhi).
Expected Launch Date:
The Chevrolet Volt is expected to be launched in India by mid-2017.
