Mahindra Xylo |
Launched in 2009, the Xylo soon became one the top-selling Mahindra cars in India. Though the its sales started dropping later on due to rising competition in the segment. So to remain in competition, Mahindra updated the MUV (Multi Utility Vehicle) in 2012 and 2014. The new model received few exterior and interior updates and a tweaked suspension for better ride quality. The MUV got new chrome strip on the hood, roof rails, new alloys, new body decals, revised tail gate with chrome garnish and slightly modified tail lights. The interior is now more comfortable, feature-rich and premium. It sports new dual-tone (black and beige) dashboard, new leather upholstery, revised instrument cluster, 2-DIN audio system with Bluetooth connectivity and steering mounted audio and cruise controls. Powering the MUV is the same 118bhp, 2.2-litre mHawk diesel unit and 93.7bhp, 2.5-litre mDI CRDe diesel engine. A 5-speed manual gearbox is the only available option. It’s one of the most fuel efficient Mahindra cars in India. The ride quality is improved, thanks to the tweaked suspension. Though, the significant body roll affects its handling, though, it’s quite predictable.
Exterior:
The new model, with minor exterior updates, resembles its predecessor. However, with new chrome strip on the hood, roof rails, new alloys and new body decals, it manages to look refreshing and more outgoing. At the rear, it gets a new tail gate with a chrome garnish and slightly modified tail lights.
Interior:
The interior, too, received some changes including a new instrument cluster, 2-DIN audio system with Bluetooth connectivity and steering mounted audio and cruise controls. The new dual-tone (black and beige) dashboard and new leather upholstery add more its premium appearance.
Engine & Transmission
The MUV is available in two diesel engine options - a 2.5-litre mDI CRDe and a 2.2-litre mHawk. The 2.5-litre mDI CRDe engine churns out a maximum power of 93.7bhp at 3600rpm with a peak torque of 218Nm between 1400rpm - 2600rpm. The 2.2-litre, mHawk CRDi engine produces a maximum power of 118bhp at 4000rpm, while yielding a peak torque of 280Nm between 2400rpm - 2800rpm. Both the powertrains are coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission.
Performance & Handling:
Engines are efficient and very silent. With linear power delivery, it accelerates easily. However, the gearbox requires some efforts. The steering is extremely light and responsive. The tweaked suspension makes ride more comfortable. The handling is good, but the body roll is quite significant.
Braking System:
Braking capabilities are pretty impressive. It is equipped with robust front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. ABS (anti-lock braking system) with EBD (electronic brake-force distribution), available only on top-end model, avoids skidding and handles sudden braking situations effortlessly.
Mileage:
The 2489 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 12 kmpl in city and 14 kmpl on highways
Safety Features:
Just like other Mahindra car models, the MUV is equipped with several safety features such as central locking system, side impact bars, child safety rear door locks, crumple zones, door open warning, keyless entry, rear defogger, engine immobilizer etc. ABS (anti-lock braking system) with EBD (electronic brake-force distribution), Intellipark reverse assist and dual airbags are available only with the top-end model.
Verdict:
The Xylo is one of the best value-for-money Mahindra cars in India. It might not be best in the segment, but a well-equipped cabin, comfortable seating and competitive pricing make it a great deal especially for fleet owners,
Competition:
Toyota Innova Vs Mahindra Xylo
There is no denying that updated Xylo looks good and more refreshing than its predecessor. It’s more feature-rich and offers improved ride quality. However, it isn’t impressive in terms of drivability and interior comfort. The Innova is a complete package with far better comfort, handling and ride quality.
